The clock of Oslo Cathedral, broken by the blast from the bomb explosion, one week ago today.

Another clock, this is from Møllergata 19, quite near where the bomb went off. Møllergata 19 used to be a prison and police station, and was used by the Nazis during WWII. It's still a symbol of freedom fighters in Norway during the war.

The centre of Oslo today... soldiers with guns, guarding the area where the bomb exploded yesterday, killing 7 and injuring many more.

People have been visiting the area during the day, bringing flowers and candles. Some are at tears, others just walk by and try to comprehend the horrible events that has struck Norway so hard.

At Utøya, a small island in the fjord Tyrifjorden, about 50 km south of Oslo, the police and other helpers have started to bring back the bodies of all the young ones who were massacred yesterday. So far 85 are confirmed dead, and 4 or 5 are still missing. Many others are injured, some of them severly. We don't know yet how high the death numbers will be.

Norway is a small nation, we aren't many people here. Just to compare; per capita Norway has lost more than twice as many as the US did during 9/11. We are all touched, we are all mourning and we will never be the same.

We receive heart warming support and concern from all over the world, and I know this means a lot to me and others. Thank you, to all who care!

This photo is from the courtyard of Oslo city hall. You can see quite a lot of the women wearing "bunad", the traditional Norwegian costume.

We were all there to celebrate the civil confirmation of about 100 young men and women, and among them was my son. A beautiful and proud day. :-)

The old tram

This is not a common sight in Oslo. It's the first and only time I've seen one of these really old trams. You may remember the photos of one of the more modern trams (called "trikk" in Norwegian) that we've showed you earlier. These are a common sight in the center of Oslo, but this old one was probably only used for a short time. It would be really cool to be able to ride it!

I don't know how old this tram is, but I'll try to find out.

Edit: I've already got help from a friend, who sent me this link (only Norwegian). It says that this is a veteran tram called "70". It was built in Hamburg, Germany, and was delivered in 1913. It was in use until 1968, and was restored for the 100th anniversary of running electrical trams in 1994.

The tram can be rented for parties, making of movies, weddings etc. There is room for 52 passengers in the first motor car and 52 passengers in the towed vehicle.

What a great idea for a special party!

The first electric billboard in Oslo, first lit the day before Christmas Eve in 1909. Hated by some, loved by others. The clock came later (1925). When it's dark, the billboard will light up, as you can see in this YouTube video. It's a landmark here, you can see it from far away. In the evenings I can see this from my balcony, and I live about 8 kilometers away.

Freia is a Norwegian chocolate factory. If you ever visit, you should have a taste of it!

I met these two happy girls on Karl Johan, and they let me take their photo. You may wonder about their clothes, but this is typical clothing for graduating students this time of year. They're called "Russ", and they usually dress in red or blue costumes (depending on what kind of high school they're attending).

Evening in Karl Johan

From 23 February The Nordic World Ski Championship has been held in Oslo. All the events is held at Holmenkollen’s new National Arena, which includes the new spectacular Holmenkollen hill and the naturally beautiful Midtstuen hill. During the WSC there have also been public and cultural events at Holmenkollen and activities especially for children.

The medal ceremonies has taken place in the University Square in downtown Oslo. There has been stage shows and a free concert every night, a separate mingling area, an exhibition of ice sculptures inspired by Edvard Munch and much more. Everything needed to create amajor celebration in Oslo. Both the competitions and the ceremonies have been enormously popular. 50 000 to over 100 000 people have gathered downtown every night!!

Todays picture is of one of the ice sculptures downtown, inspired by (I think) the painting "Evening in Karl Johan" of Edvard Munch.

The Cross-Country 50 km for men on Sunday will be the last competition in Ski-VM 2011. See more pictures from the championship at Ski-VM 2011's public gallery.

Happy New Year from Oslo!

I live next to a construction site. It's sometimes annoying (because of the noise), but it's also interesting to watch the changes from week to week. I take photos almost every day to document the process. (They're building 50 new houses, so this will probably take a while.)

The past few days they've placed this really huge crane there. I must admit I'd rather not be one who has to work at the top of it... I admire these men, it must be cold to do this work during winter time!

The Akerselva river runs through Oslo from Maridalsvannet and exits in the Oslo fjord by the new opera house. The river is 8-9 kilometers long, and along it runs a nice walkway system for those who enjoy hiking.

I've thought of walking by the river for a long time, and the other day I got the chance to walk along the river for a little while. It's really nice, and obviously lots of people enjoy this area.

This used to be the main office for "Norges Bank" (central bank of Norway), situated at Bankplassen opposite of Engebret Cafe, from yesterday's post.

The building is from 1906 and was the main office until Norges Bank moved into new premises in a larger building nearby in 1986. From 1990 the building has been the Museum of Contemporary Art.

This is the oldest restaurant in Oslo (that is still serving). It's from 1857 and used to be the meeting place for actors and actresses from the Christiania Theater back in the old days.

Engebret is situated on "Bankplassen" (the bank square) and is definitely worth a look inside. Unfortunately, the prices are so high that I can't afford to eat there, but I did enjoy something cold to drink.

It's finally summer! The temperature has been quite high the last couple of days, and its really nice to be outside. The picture is from Sofienberg Park, which was crowded yesterday! Lots of people went out to barbecue, drink, talk, play games and have fun! :o)

According to Wikipedia Sofienbergparken is one of the most visited parks in Oslo, approximately 3000 people visiting on sunny days. Probably because the park is quite big, and it's located in a very densely populated area.

New piece of art outside the opera house

The piece is called 'Hun ligger' (She Lies) by Monica Bonvicini.

The sculpture is 12 meter tall and weighs 335 tons (the sculpture alone is 35 tons, then the pontoon/float weighs 300 tons).

- She Lies is meant to be a monument about change, longing and hope. A monument about construction: its beauty and its implicit visions, the beauty of the un-done as a permanent state of change . (Monica Bonvicini)

According to the artist, she has "translated" the painting 'Das Eismeer' (1823-24) by Caspar David Friedrich.

The sculpture will be properly unveiled by the Norwegian Queen Sonja, on Tuesday May 11th 2010.

Nordmarka is the mostly forested region which makes up the northern part of Oslo. The forests are popular sites for hiking and skiing. Most of the forests are protected, and it is not possible to obtain building permits for cottages in the area.

There are several lakes in Nordmarka. Todays picture, taken a couple of weeks ago, gives you a view of one of them. This lake is called Bjørnsjøen. Translated the name means Bear Lake.

President Obama is in Oslo

President Obama and his wife, Michele, arrived in Oslo this morning. I just watched Obama visit the Nobel Institute where both he and his wife signed a book to accept the Nobel Peace Prize. This photo is just from my TV, of course. Strangely enough, the photographers of Oslo Daily Photo weren't invited. ;-)

Helicopters circle over Oslo and many streets are closed for normal traffic, to ensure the President's security during his visit. Hopefully he will be safe.

This is from a junior high school, where the pupils in their last year are arriving for a school dance. To some of us (who have lived a few decades longer), it seems a bit strange that 14-15 year olds arrive in limousines. But I bet they're having the night of their lives. :-)

To the left, some pupils arrive by horse and carriage. Nice! :-)

Look at that fantastic dress! This reminds me more of movie stars arriving to a huge party, than school children having a dance. Where is the red carpet? They must have forgot... :-)

It's been a lovely day in Oslo and in most of Norway today. The sun was shining, people were happy and lots and lots of children walked in the big parade to cheer for the king and the royal family.

St. Patrick's Day is an annual feast day which celebrates Saint Patrick, one of the patron saints of Ireland, and it is generally celebrated on March 17. The day is the national day of Ireland.

In Oslo the Irish celebrated the St. Patrick's Day with a parade downtown today. And these girls represented the Nordic Society of Irish Dancers.

Telenor Arena is a new multi-use indoor stadium being constructed at Fornebu in the municipality of Bærum, Norway, just outside Oslo. It will be used for football matches and will be the new home ground of the football club Stabæk, but also for conserts and other events. The stadium is scheduled to open ahead of the 2009 season in Norwegian football.

The Australian hard rock band AC/DC performed at the arena on 18 February. This concert was the first of the European Leg of their Black Ice World Tour.

The grafitti says "No to EU! Yes to a lot!" At least I think that's what they mean. ;) The last word "møe" is a dialect word from Southern Norway and means "a lot" (mye).

Norway is still not a part of the European Union. Whether or not the country should apply for conventional membership has been one of the most dominant and divisive issues in Norwegian political and economic debate for several decades. The Norwegian people have voted 'no' twice, both in 1972 and in 1994.

Blindern is an area in Oslo, but also the name of the main campus of the University of Oslo. Near the university is Blindern Studenterhjem, a home for 220 students. The home opened in 1925 and the architect was Nicolai Beer. The beautiful building is listed/protected.

Oslo has had a lot of snow lately, which causes the typical winter chaos. There aren't enough snowploughs to clear the roads in time, so the smartest thing is really to just leave your car where it is parked and hope you'll be able to get it out later. Unfortunately, the usual alternative to cars is the metro, but the metro has big problems when it's snowing; it's often delayed and sometimes you will find that the train you need has been cancelled. Bummer...

The best thing really, is to just stay at home, light candles and drink hot cocoa while reading a good book. :-)

Oscarshall is situated at Bygdøy in Oslo. It was built in 1852 for King Oscar I, and then sold to the Norwegian state in 1863. It has been at the disposal for Norwegian kings ever since.

The architectural style is patterned on the English neo-Gothic castle, which was typical in Scandinavia in the mid-19th century. In addition to the main building, the property consists of a park that stretches down to the fjord, where an open pavilion is located.

After being restored in the 1990s, the castle opened to the public as a museum.

Theme Day: Best photo of the year 2008

Happy New Year everyone and thank you for all your visits and comments in 2008!

It's so hard to pick a photo to be the best of a whole year, but we chose this picture from Ystad Daily Photo. It's a beautiful motive which reminds us of the spring that we long for. The road reminds us of what lies ahead of us; which we do not yet know what is. The poem that Fredrik added beneath the photo is a lovely one which we think is such a fitting way to welcome the new year.

Today has been a rainy day. But the city looks good in the dark anyway. All the lights and the reflections at the wet ground makes it look good. This is the view outside the main entrance at the National Theatre a couple of hours ago. :o)

We are so lucky to have another guest blogger. This photo is by André and his photo is from the river that devides Oslo in two: Akerselva river.

The river starts from the large lake Maridalsvannet (which also is the drinking water for a large part of Oslo's population). The river runs for 8.2 kilometers before it ends in the Oslo fjord and offers nice walks for those who are interested:

Follow the river Akerselva from Maridalsvannet to the centre of Oslo.
8 km with recreation, through forests and old history, fishing, swimming and several waterfalls. The highest waterfall is next to "Hønse-Lovisas hus", a small, red house, and the Beier bridge.

A while back we told you they are tearing down the skijump Holmenkollen, and this is what it looks like now. Not much left, just these sad parts. To the left you can see the Holmenkollen Park Hotel, a beautiful wooden building.
